Preliminary Design Report for Hayden Lake Restoration Project Now Available
The Hayden Lake Watershed Improvement District (HLWID) has released the Preliminary Design Report (PDR) for the Hayden Lake and Hayden Creek Restoration Project, along with supporting documents and public feedback materials.
This report marks an important early step in addressing water quality in Hayden Lake, particularly in the North Arm, where harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred in recent years.
What the Preliminary Design Report Includes
The Hayden Lake Preliminary Design Report outlines potential strategies to improve lake health by:
- Reducing phosphorus pollution in Hayden Lake from Hayden Creek
- Addressing phosphorus stored in lake sediments and aquatic vegetation
- Improving water circulation in the North Arm of Hayden Lake
These concepts are part of an early-stage (10%) design process and will continue to be refined through additional data collection, engineering, and environmental review.
Community and Agency Feedback
Following the release of the report, HLWID gathered input from residents, partner agencies, and technical experts.
Key topics included:
- Project timeline and construction expectations
- Questions about Hayden Lake water levels and environmental impacts
- Clarification of nutrient sources contributing to algal blooms
- Feedback on proposed restoration approaches
A full summary of comments and responses is included in the documents below.
What’s Next for the Hayden Lake Restoration Project
The project will move into the next phase of design and evaluation, which includes:
- Refining restoration alternatives
- Additional water quality monitoring and analysis
- Environmental permitting and funding coordination
- Continued public outreach and engagement
